Highlighting Westmoreland Schools With Male Teachers On Staff
“The duties of a teacher are neither few nor small, but they elevate the mind and give energy to the character.” – Dorothea Dix
Effective strategies used to 'teach or reach the male brain' by male teachers
Allow the boys to make physical illustration on various math concept.
Cooperative and Discovery learning techniques
Utilising class interest. If it is a class filled with footballers, make an effort to do some research and correlate the topic with the sport.
Use hot topics of the media to pull students in.
Boys need to feel important. Give them chores in the class room and during recess.
Boys need to be apart of an experience to appreciate what is being taught. Involve them in the lessons and make them share their similar experience.
Use a lot of technology. Boys live for technology.
Do a lot of out door lessons. Join the outdoor lessons world wide to get ideas.
Be apart of their play. Don’t feel too big to go out and play with them. They respect you more and are more opened up.
Reward them for excellence. Reward them for every little improvement.
Use books with pictures of things they like. (Cars, action figures, heroes, space, animals , etc)
Just be willing to meet them where they are and go down to their level to work them up to where they are to be.
NB: They are not girls. Don’t force them too much they will catch up later. Encourage the parents/ guardians to make the home child/ learning friendly.
Some effective strategies that I have used to teach males effectively include: project- based learning, games, provide boys with the opportunity to participate in decision making and the incorporation of technology.
